It can be difficult to discuss body image issues — especially when those issues involve your vulva. Your vulva has two folds of skin: the labia majora and the labia minora. The outer folds are called the labia majora. The inner folds are called the labia minora.
Labia come in all different shapes and sizes. Unfortunately for some, the shape and size of the labia can cause discomfort and even insecurity. If you are not happy with the look or the feel of your labia, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joyesh Raj is here for you. Here, he discusses labiaplasty and explains the difference between trim and wedge techniques.
What Is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty, also called labial reduction, is a surgical procedure to modify the size and/or shape of the labia. It is most commonly a procedure to reduce the appearance of the labia minora, the inner folds of skin that lead directly to the vaginal opening. The labia majora, the outer folds of skin, can also be modified during the procedure. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon carefully removes excessive tissue, fat, and skin. This is done to create the desired labia appearance. The size of the labia is often reduced and issues with asymmetry can be corrected as well.
What Is the Trim Technique?
The technique that your surgeon uses for your procedure will depend on your unique anatomy and concerns. One of the techniques that is available for labiaplasty is the trim technique.
The trim technique is the most common technique used to perform labiaplasty. The trim technique involves creating an incision along the outer edge of the labia minora to remove excess tissue. The amount that is removed will depend on the patient and their concerns. This technique is an effective way to reduce the size of the labia minora. It can also impact the color of the labia by removing the dark pigmentation along the edge of the tissue.
What Is the Wedge Technique?
The wedge technique is another safe and effective labiaplasty technique. The wedge technique removes a wedge of tissue from both sides of the labia minora. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon creates a V-shaped incision in the center of both sides of the labia minora to remove a wedge of tissue. The cut edges are then stitched back together.
This technique can be used to reduce the size and the shape of the labia minora. It retains the natural contours and color of the labia while tightening the labia minora.
