Confirm the Surgeon Is Board Certified

The most important criteria for a plastic surgeon is that he or she is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to oversee plastic surgeons). Becoming board certified requires a surgeon to demonstrate they have the education, training and skillset needed to perform plastic surgery procedures. Maintaining board certification requires continuing education courses and passing written tests every 10 years.

Confirm the Surgeon’s Experience in Your Desired Procedure(s)

Ideally, you want to select a surgeon who has been performing the type of surgery you desire regularly and for many years. Some plastic surgeons have special skills or expertise in a particular procedure or set of procedures, and it is a good idea to determine this early on in your research or in consultation with the doctor. You do not want to select a plastic surgeon who focuses on rhinoplasty to perform your tummy tuck.

Check Their Previous Results

A good way to determine that the surgeon is a good fit for your needs is to review before and after photographs of previous patients that underwent the procedure you are interested in. Pay close attention to patients of a similar age or who have a body type or facial features similar to yours. These photographs can help you visualize the type of results you can expect from the surgeon and speak to the surgeon’s aesthetic abilities.
