Breast Cancer Reconstruction
If you wish to reconstruct your breasts after mastectomy, you have several options.
Some women opt to recreate their breasts with saline or silicone implants. Today’s implants are extremely natural in look and feel, with a wide variety of sizes and different shapes. Implant-based reconstruction usually involves a few steps. Prior to placing the implants, Dr. Raj will place a device called a tissue expander within the chest; the device slowly and gradually expands to make room within the tissue to accommodate the implants. Once there is a sufficient “pocket” within the tissue to hold the implants, a saline or silicone pair is placed. Breast implants are designed to last for many years without any problems.
The second option for breast cancer reconstruction involves using tissue transplanted from another area of the body, such as the abdomen or back, to reconstruct the breast mound. A “flap” of skin, fat, muscle and blood vessels is either detached from the body or tunneled underneath the skin to the chest. Dr. Raj offers the latissimus dorsi flap (taken from the back) and the TRAM flap (taken from the abdomen).
In some cases, implants and a flap can be combined to recreate the breast.
Also, breast reconstruction can take place during or after mastectomy. Dr. Raj works with each patient’s oncology team to construct a suitable plan of treatment.
Breast Reduction
If you have oversized, heavy breasts, it is likely that they impede your range of motion or activity level in some way (as well as causing other physical and psychological side effects). Reducing their size can alleviate significant discomfort and improve quality of life significantly. Dr. Raj will help you determine the best breast size for your body, so you can enjoy greater comfort and better self-confidence.
Congenital Breast Deformities
Congenital breast deformities include conditions such as inverted nipples, tuberous breasts and otherwise abnormal anatomical breast shape. Treatment of congenital breast deformities depends on the specific problem needing correction. Dr. Raj will consult with you to identify the problem and create a solution that satisfies your cosmetic goals.
