Reasons You May Develop a Double Chin
Some of the main causes of double chin/extra neck fat include:
- Weight Gain: Extra fat is stored in fat cells throughout the body, with the chin being no exception.
- Genetics: Where your body stores fat is largely attributable to your genetics. Some people have trim bodies yet store a disproportionate amount of fat in their neck/chin, due to no fault of their own.
- Aging: Skin and fat slowly droop over time, leading to an accumulation of submental fat.
Are You a Candidate for Neck and Chin Liposuction?
Dr. Raj performs submental liposuction on patients who are dissatisfied with the extra fat stored around the neck and chin. The ideal candidate is a non-smoker who is in good health. The surgery is most successful on patients with reasonably “elastic” skin in this area, but Dr. Raj may also recommend combining liposuction with a skin tightening surgery like neck lift to avoid creating a wattle or “turkey neck” of loose skin.
How Dr. Raj Performs Submental Liposuction
Chin and neck liposuction is an outpatient procedure that typically only requires local anesthesia to keep you comfortable during your surgery. Dr. Raj makes tiny incisions on the underside of the chin through which he can insert a cannula that breaks up the fat cells and then suctions out this fat. He also spends time molding the remaining fat to create appealing, natural-looking contours.
Chin/Neck Liposuction Recovery & Results
The recovery for this procedure is significantly easier than other cosmetic procedures. You may only need a few days to one week of recovery to resume your normal activities, taking pain medication to relieve any lingering discomfort. However, bruising and swelling can take a few weeks to subside. Dr. Raj will schedule follow-up appointments to check on your healing and approve when you can resume strenuous exercise again.
Your results should be permanent since fat cells removed with liposuction cannot return. Be aware that putting on more weight will cause the fat to be stored in other areas of the body instead, which may downgrade your contours.
Complementary Procedures
For many patients, Dr. Raj recommends a combination of facelift or neck lift with submental liposuction. Lax skin on the neck and lower face will become more significant after volume is removed, and most patients do not want to look older at the expense of looking thinner. With a neck lift/face lift, Dr. Raj can remove loose skin and give more definition to the jawline for sleek contours.
You may also choose to have liposuction performed on additional areas that have excess fat to create appealing contours throughout the body. Dr. Raj stresses that liposuction is not a weight loss surgery; it works best if you are close to your goal weight with some stubborn fat deposits.
