Physical and Psychological Benefits of Nose Surgery
With a more attractive nose, your entire face will light up. Your features will look more balanced and harmonious. The size or shape of your nose will no longer detract from your beautiful eyes or a strong chin. Instead, it will flatter the rest of your facial features. Another important benefit of rhinoplasty is that many people sleep more soundly after surgery. By modifying the internal structures of the nose — in some cases, intentionally to correct a flaw or deformity — breathing becomes easier to allow for deep quality sleep.
Rhinoplasty provides more than just physical benefits. A better-looking nose will boost your self-confidence. You will no longer feel embarrassed by a prominent nose or try to hide it. You won’t duck your head in photos or hide your nose behind your hand.
A more attractive nose and better facial harmony can give you the confidence you need to pursue more opportunities — both professional and personal.
What Does Rhinoplasty Accomplish?
Rhinoplasty can address a number of nose-related concerns, including the following:
- Oversized, crooked or asymmetrical nose
- Nose that is out of proportion to the rest of the face
- Nasal tip that is bulbous, upturned or droopy
- Flared or oversized nostrils
- Hump on the bridge of the nose
- Breathing problems stemming from irregularities inside the nose
In general, the goal of surgery is to improve the size, shape and angles of the nose for a more flattering appearance. Structural irregularities that cause breathing problems or congestion will also be corrected.
Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
There are two main approaches to rhinoplasty: open and closed. During open rhinoplasty, Dr. Raj creates an incision on the columella, the thin strip of skin between the nostrils. The advantage of the open technique is that the surgeon has more visibility and thus more control during surgery. However, this approach may leave a visible scar and require a longer recovery.
With the closed technique to rhinoplasty, Dr. Raj makes the incision on the interior of the nostrils. While this technique does not leave visible scars and generally involves a shorter recovery, it may mean that the surgeon has less visibility during the surgery.
Your rhinoplasty treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs and goals, as discussed with Dr. Raj during your initial consultation. He will vary his techniques to produce the agreed-upon results.
What to Expect During Recovery?
Following rhinoplasty, you should expect to take one to two weeks off of work and other normal activities so you can get as much bed rest as possible. You will need to keep your head elevated at all times, even while sleeping, during the first few days of recovery. Swelling and bruising on the nose are temporary side effects. While these effects should go away after a few weeks, it may take several months (up to a year) for all swelling to disappear. It is possible for the bruising to extend into the eye area, creating the appearance of “black eyes.” This is normal and should go away a few days after surgery. Discomfort can be relieved with oral pain medication or by applying a soft icepack on the nose.
Dr. Raj may apply a splint to provide extra support to the nasal structure while it heals. The splint should stay in place until Dr. Raj removes them. The surgeon will meet with you regularly during your recovery and let you know when it is safe to resume exercise and other normal activities based on your healing progress.
Rhinoplasty Frequently Asks Questions
When will the final results of rhinoplasty become visible?
While some results of rhinoplasty will be immediately noticeable, it may take up to a year for the final results to become visible. This is how long it may take for the nose to fully heal and residual swelling to disappear.
Are the results from rhinoplasty permanent?
The results from rhinoplasty are considered to be permanent. However, it is important to understand that the nose will continue to age as normal after surgery.
What are the potential risks and side effects associated with rhinoplasty?
Possible side effects of rhinoplasty include swelling, bruising and soreness. Rare complications and risks include excessive bleeding, blood clotting, infection and poor wound healing. Dr. Raj will explain all potential risks and side effects in detail with you during your initial consultation.
Is rhinoplasty covered by health insurance?
Depending on the details of your insurance plan, all or a portion of the cost of your rhinoplasty may be covered by insurance if the procedure is deemed medically necessary. Rhinoplasty is considered to be medically necessary when it is performed to correct a breathing or other functional problem.
